May Queen Apron — Midsommar

A quick project to help Maggie bring their Midsommar cosplay to life for Momocon 2023, this apron was knocked out in just a few hours.

We had a few different ideas on how to achieve the blue embroidery on the edge of Dani’s apron in the movie, and set out to the fabric store to find something in the linen/gauze/slub family. We got lucky when we found this lightweight gauzy cotton with a blue embroidered design already along the warp of the fabric. Score! All I had to do now was assemble in a way that kept these designs along the outer edge.

I decided to use the center of the design as my seam line, since the whole design was a bit too large for the size apron we were going for. I measured 3/8” off from that center for seam allowance, then cut off the rest of the fabric. The fabric was then pieced together so that the embroidery went along the outer perimeter of the cape. Since this fabric was pretty thin and airy, I lined it with some leftover white cotton from my stash. I knew Maggie was wearing a dress without pockets, so I went ahead and added some side seam pockets inside the apron to give them a place to stash their phone at the convention. I used to same white cotton to create a simple tie, and it was convention ready!

Maggie ended up wearing a shorter dress at the convention, so the apron was pinned up to keep the length proportional. Unfortunately this did end up hiding all my careful piecing, but c’est la vie!
